Jean Sibelius (born 'Johan': 'Jean' is the French version of his name) was a Finnish composer, most famous for his symphonies and tone-poems.
Born in Hämeenlinna on 8 December 1865, he lived to be 91, dying in Järvenpää on 20 September 1957, but after 1926 he produced almost no music. After struggling for years to produce an eighth symphony, and announcing more than once that it was about to be performed, it seems most likely he burnt it towards the end of his life.
